Farm Advisor

Boyne Rivers Trust (BRT) is an environmental charity to the conservation and protection of the Boyne River catchment. The vision of the Trust is for a Thriving River Catchment, valued and protected by its communities’. The aim of the trust is to protect, enhance and restore the water bodies of the Boyne catchment through community-led projects and activities. Job Summary The Farm Advisor will work with farmers, across the Boyne catchment, to identify potential changes in agricultural and land management practices, intended to bring about improved water quality and freshwater habitats at a catchment-scale, whilst also benefiting farm businesses. The post-holder will undertake one-to-one farm visits, working with landowners to identify ways to reduce the risk and impact of diffuse and point-source water pollution from agriculture. This will be done through non-regulatory farmyard and field assessments to identify possible water protection measures and the production of bespoke farm water management plans. The Farm Advisor will also aim to raise awareness, improve understanding and acceptance amongst farmers and land managers of diffuse and point-source pollution from agriculture and its impact on water quality and the wider water environment. Engagement with farmers in the Boyne catchment will seek to create, through a voluntary approach, a sense of ownership and achievement within the farming community in relation to improving water quality and water dependent species and habitats in the catchments across the Boyne Rivers Trust’s operational area. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Water Vole Project Plan and prioritise mink trapping priority areas of the Lune catchment in coordination with partners (Eden Rivers Trust, the Environment Agency, RSPB Cumbria Connect) and with the support of the Trust Manager. Manage and grow the mink monitoring and dispatch network across the northern Lune catchment working out from a core area adjacent to the watershed boundary with the Eden catchment, specifically: Develop a network of volunteers (including landowners, tenants and other stakeholders) to service a network of up to 40 mink traps (checking, cleaning, setting remote trap alarms, humane dispatch) on a regular cycle. Ensure all mink control elements within LRT’s projects are in line with best practice, including arranging training as required. Manage LRT’s water vole reintroduction programme in the Lune catchment, specifically: Identify suitable habitat for water vole releases and manage the species release and monitoring programme — working with consultants and volunteers. Juvenile Fish Monitoring Work closely with LRT’s River Restoration Officer to learn how to carry out electro-fishing and understand the existing network of monitoring sites. Lead LRT’s annual electro-fishing programme – across approx. 30 sites during July to September. Advertise & organise opportunities for volunteers to participate in electro-fishing surveys. White Clawed Crayfish Monitoring Undertake training course and training requirements to become a certified White Clawed Crayfish surveyor. In coordination with the Trust Manager develop a programme of regular surveys of known WCC sites and exploratory surveys of possible new sites. PERSON DESCRIPTION The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate that they are exceptionally self-motivated and are passionate about improving the environment. They must be a good communicator with a strong background in project development and delivery within the environmental sector, or the ability to learn this. A good knowledge of the Lune catchment and the functioning of river catchments would be beneficial. Essential Degree or equivalent relevant work experience e.g. a degree in conservation biology, environmental science or similar and 1+years of relevant experience, or 3 years relevant work experience. Comprehensive understanding of the impact of invasive non-native species and appropriate ways to manage their populations and spread for the benefit of native wildlife. Managed volunteers (support, led and developed them) to deliver funded projects. Excellent Interpersonal skills with the tact, diplomacy and negotiating skills to develop and maintain good relations with the owners/​managers of land on which you are working. Willingness to undergo training towards obtaining protected species licences required for crayfish survey and crayfish rescue work. West Cumbria Rivers Trust is an environmental charity dedicated to improving the watercourses and surrounding catchments in West Cumbria for people and wildlife. Our patch covers several principal river catchments spanning a substantial part of the Lake District National Park, West Cumbria and the Solway. We have an impressive track-record of successful delivery of projects. We have a vacancy for a Project Officer (Commons) to join the passionate and growing team delivering the Resilient Glenderamackin’ Landscape Recovery (RGLR) project — an ambitious, large-scale catchment restoration project located upstream of Keswick. Combining public and private investment through a blended finance approach, this pioneering project aims to restore habitats, support nature-friendly farming, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, restore rivers and watercourses, and improve biodiversity across the wider catchment for long-term environmental and community benefit. Following the successful submission of deliverables for the Round 2 Landscape Recovery project development phase, we are now preparing to expand the Resilient Glenderamackin team to implement this ambitious 20-year project (subject to successful negotiations). We are seeking a motivated and knowledgeable Project Officer to play a key role in developing and delivering our ambitious habitat restoration proposals on three commons as part of this multi-million-pound programme. Working closely with the Resilient Glenderamackin project team, you will act as the main point of contact for the commoners and landowners involved in the project. Your ecological knowledge and expertise will be instrumental in supporting the commons to transition into an RGLR agreement — or alternative agreements where appropriate — to improve the condition of these unique upland habitats, including Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), whilst supporting sustainable farm businesses within a World Heritage Site. This is a wide ranging role involving liaising with stakeholders, running consultations and close collaboration with commoners, landowners and regulatory authorities to develop and agree habitat management proposals for the restoration of these important upland habitats. You will lead on the creation and implementation of three ambitious Commons Land Management Plans in the northern Lake District which will form part of the wider project Resilient Glenderamackin Land Management Plan. The role is expected to continue beyond 12 months, subject to successful negotiations with Defra. The successful candidate will have a degree, or equivalent experience, in an ecological or environmental discipline and at least 2 years’ experience in a relevant field. Building and maintaining positive working relationships with the graziers, non-graziers and landowners upon whose land the land management plans will be delivered is a key aspect of this role. Strong communication skills and the ability to work with a wide range of people in a friendly and professional manner are therefore essential. You will be an excellent listener, empathetic, and able to negotiate workable and practical solutions when a consensus view does not immediately emerge. You will be a self-starter who can demonstrate a committed, mature and flexible approach and have the enthusiasm to develop our work on the commons. You will work closely with other members of the RG team, an external facilitator and partners including Foundation for Common Land and Natural England. You will also have excellent organisational, I.T. and report writing skills. Training and support will be provided. This role is initially offered as a full-time, 18-month contract, with the opportunity to extend. During phase 1, you will work with farmers, landowners, partners and local communities to develop ambitious riparian and habitat improvement projects and write a capital bid that, over a further five years, will deliver a phased programme of small and large-scale projects that deliver real impact to rivers, wildlife and people across the Caldew catchment. This role could be for you if you: Have a degree-level qualification in a relevant discipline, backed up with in-depth technical knowledge and 5 years plus experience of developing and delivering large-scale habitat improvement projects on privately owned land,Are confident managing budgets, reporting to funders and developing fundable project proposals, andAre an effective people manager and a persuasive communicator who can build trust with farmers, landowners and partners.
