The Big River Watch is a citizen science campaign to help build a picture of river health across the country. Anybody in the UK and Ireland can get involved by downloading the free app, heading to their local river, observing for 15 minutes and answering our easy survey questions in the app.
The Big River Watch is coordinated by The Rivers Trust. In 2026, it is supported by the Amber River Foundation.
It has also been supported by partners and funding from CIWEM and The Rivers Trust Foundation for Water Research (FWR) Legacy Fund and Catchment Systems Thinking Cooperative (CaSTCo) project from the Ofwat Innovation Fund.
As of 2025, Big River Watch has also partnered with Earthwatch to align the survey dates with the Great UK WaterBlitz.
