Author, broadcaster, expedition-leader, and angler Will Millard joins The Rivers Trust as it's newest ambassador to support our work in ensuring thriving rivers.

Will first engaged with The Rivers Trust three years ago during its Big Give fundraising campaign which secured ÂŁ80,000 to fund vital river restoration work. Now Will is back and ready to add his voice to help raise awareness of the challenges rivers face across the UK and Ireland.

As an avid angler, Will is a passionate advocate for cleaner rivers. Much of his work as a writer and broadcaster has involved themes of rural life, nature connectedness, and environmentalism. He presented several BBC series including: The River Wye, The River Taff, and Go Fish! He recounted the origins of his love for fishing in his 2018 debut memoir, The Old Man and the Sand Eel, documenting his experiences growing up fishing alongside his grandfather. His work as a children's author has inspired a love of rivers and angling in young readers around the world with works including My First Day Fishing.

On becoming an Ambassador for The Rivers Trust, Will said:

“I grew up on a little river in the Norfolk Fens and my whole life has been orientated towards them. I have always instinctively known that I’m at my happiest whenever I’m by rivers - they run right through my soul and they run right through the heart of what it means to be a human too.

“Our ancestors used rivers to navigate, hunt and drink. We built our communities beside them and spread our species across the globe because of them. They are vital for all life – but recently we have lost sight of quite how important they really are.

“That’s why I’m so proud to be an Ambassador for The Rivers Trust. This brilliant charity supports the many brilliant Rivers Trusts working hard right across the UK and Ireland. Together, they are restoring river catchments and getting us all back to where we truly belong: by the edges of the clean, flourishing, healthy waterways we all should love.”

Will joins a growing group of passionate Ambassadors for The Rivers Trust: adventurer and author Al Humphreys; NHS GP, author, and broadcaster Dr Amir Khan; anthropologist and broadcaster Professor Alice Roberts; and gold medal-winning Olympic Rower Dr Imogen Grant MBE.

“My own happiness really depended on being close to water, specifically rivers, and I know I'm not alone in that”
